Regular price £13.50

Kianderi Washing Station is located on the foothill of Mount Kenya, just outside of the town Kerugoya. This western part of Kirinyaga borders Nyeri and has some of the most fertile soils in the country. The washing station is part of the Inoi Farmers Cooperative Society.

This cooperative has 900 active members and produces around 750 sacks of coffee per year. Among the environmentally conscious farming practices they have implemented throughout the cooperative, the farmers take the pulp of the cherries back home and mix it with cow manure to then be used as fertiliser on their farms.

In addition to SL28 and SL34, this coffee also contains Batian, a variety developed by the Coffee Research Foundation in Kenya and released in 2010, as well as Ruiru 11, developed at Ruiru Coffee Research Station in 1985. Both these varieties are early maturing and highly resistant to coffee leaf rust and coffee berry disease.

The soil type around the cooperative is known as clay loam soil. This type of soil is nutrient-rich and retains water well, which supports steady cherry development. This can result in coffees with a fuller body, creamy or syrupy mouthfeel, and good viscosity. Clay loam provides stability and nutrition, often creating structured, balanced coffees with emphasis on body and sweetness - especially when paired with varieties like SL28 or Batian.

Expect tasting notes of yellow passion fruit, rhubarb compote, hibiscus fruit tea
