Chelbesa Red Honey, Ethiopia
Regular price £15.20This lot has been put together from the production of 476 smallholders farmers delivering their cherries to the mill. Located in the Gedeo zone of the Gedeb district, Worka Chelbesa is one of the finest coffee producing areas within the famous Gedeb Woreda. Known for its dense layered semi forest vegetation structure encompassing false banana trees as well as shade grown coffee trees. In this area the most common type of soil is redbrown, a particularly fertile type rich in iron and with high acidity content. So, this coffee is a great example of the best coffee growing agro-ecology.
The exporter, SNAP Specialty Coffee, was established in Addis Ababa in 2008, by tech entrepreneur, Negusse Debela. After a business trip to Minnesota in the mid-2000s, Negusse tried pour over coffee and saw the untapped potential in exporting coffee. So, Negusse founded SNAP Specialty Coffee with a clear purpose: to position Ethiopian coffee among the best on the market. Rather than rushing into production, he spent a good amount of time visiting coffee processing sites across southern Ethiopia, where he learnt about farming practices and processing methods. First, the company focused on partnerships and managing existing facilities before making strategic investments in infrastructure. In 2017, Negusse established his first own washing station in Worka Chelbesa, in the Gedeb woreda.
The company now runs three coffee washing and processing stations in Chelelektu, Kochere District of the Gedeo Zone and a partnering washing stations in Uraga, Guji and Nensebo, West Arsi exporting specialty Arabica. They acquired the processing station Danche in 2019 to meet their growing needs. And since then Danche has developed a cult reputation globally - incredible consistency year after year, with laser clean lots that demonstrate the best of the Gedeb profile.
