Community Impact
At Mission Coffee Works, we believe in more than just brewing exceptional coffee. Making sure that we do our part to look after the planet, empowering our people, and supporting our local communities is incredibly important to us.
From bean to cup, we strive to minimise our negative impact and maximise our positive contributions to all of our communities.
Our bags are fully recyclable, made from PE. You can recycle them wherever you would recycle carrier bags - this is sometimes at home and usually at most supermarkets.
We spent a lot of time and thought choosing this material, it’s one material so easy to recycle, and whilst we’d rather not use plastic we think recyclable is the best option right now. Often coffee bags appear recyclable, but they rarely are. Kraft bags for instance are often kraft paper outside, foil inside, and have a plastic valve to allow gas to escape. Biodegradable products emit much higher amounts of methane if they end up decomposing in landfill (which they often do).
One of the ways we are reducing our environmental impact is by limiting the amount of waste we send to landfill directly from the roastery, but also downstream via our customers and wholesale partners. Here are a few things we do to be better for the environment.
Reusable Buckets
All of our London-based wholesale customers have the option to get their beans delivered in 4kg buckets. Once they’ve used all their beans, we will collect the empty buckets with the next delivery, clean them, and reuse them for other orders.
In 2024 we prevented 665kg waste going to landfill.
Paper Tape
We switched to a paper tape for all of our deliveries. With this switch, the boxes we send to our customers are now more likely to actually be recycled, and full recycling bags won't be cross-contaminated by people forgetting to remove the tape.
We used circa 9,200m less acrylic tape in 2024.
Coffee Chaff
The byproduct of roasting coffee is called chaff. It's the thin, papery husk that sheds from coffee beans as they expand during the roasting process. We give away the chaff for people to use in their gardens and the chaff we don't repurpose goes in our food waste bin to get recyled.
In 2024, 0% of roasting byproduct went to landfill
Community support
We want to play our part in lifting up the many different people in the UK coffee community - that means being an active partner. We support through training, mentorships, and knowledge sharing.
The organisations that we work closely with are:
Well Grounded
An award-winning organisation that supports the UK’s unemployed with the skills to access sustainable careers in coffee. We take part in their round table events and support through work experience.
Fair Shot
A social enterprise cafe in Covent Garden which aims to transform the lives of young adults with learning disabilities and/or autism through coffee beans. We provide mentorship for recent graduates who have started their first jobs and help them navigate the workplace.
We set out to benchmark our current sustainability efforts to give us a starting point for improvement. This resulted in our first impact report which you can read here.
